FairSplit was built on a simple principle: your bill-splitting is none of our business. Here's exactly what happens — and doesn't happen — when you use it.
The short version
No personal data is collected. No accounts. No cookies. No ads. Everything you enter stays in your browser. FairSplit has no database of your expenses.
What we don't collect
FairSplit never asks for, stores, or transmits your name, email address, phone number, payment details, location, or any other personal information. There are no user accounts and no login.
Your expenses — who paid, who owes what, the amounts, the currencies — are never sent to any server. All calculations happen locally in your browser the moment you enter them.
Shareable links
When you share a split via link, the expense data is encoded directly into the URL itself (after the # fragment). It is never uploaded to or stored on any FairSplit server — the link is self-contained.
Only the people you share the link with can see the data in it. FairSplit cannot read it.
Live exchange rates
To show live FX rates, FairSplit fetches current rates from open.er-api.com. This is a standard HTTPS request for public rate data — no personal information is included in it.
If you use FairSplit offline, this request is skipped and no network call is made.
Currency auto-detection
On first load, FairSplit uses ip-api.com to guess your local currency from your approximate region. This is a single lookup — your IP address is used momentarily by that service to return a country code and currency, then discarded. FairSplit does not store or log your IP address.
You can change the detected currency at any time. This lookup only happens to save you a tap.
Analytics
FairSplit uses Umami for basic usage analytics — page views and feature usage counts. Umami is privacy-focused: it sets no cookies, does no fingerprinting, and collects no personal data. It only shows aggregate numbers (e.g. "500 splits today").
This data helps us understand which features are useful. It cannot be used to identify you.
Cookies & local storage
FairSplit sets no tracking cookies. Your browser's local storage may be used to remember UI preferences (such as your preferred language or currency) between visits. This data never leaves your device.
Third-party services
FairSplit uses three external services, each with a minimal, specific purpose:
- open.er-api.com — live foreign exchange rates. No personal data sent.
- ip-api.com — approximate region for currency auto-detection. Not stored by FairSplit.
- Umami (cloud.umami.is) — cookie-free, anonymised page analytics. No personal data.
FairSplit has no advertising partners and shares no data with any third party beyond the above.
Children
FairSplit collects no personal data from anyone, including children. The service is suitable for all ages.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we'll update the date below. Because we collect no personal data, we have no way to notify users directly — but we'll keep this page current.
